The idyllic Canary Islands destination of Tenerife is well known for its beaches, year round sunshine and myriad tourist offerings, from activities to accommodation. Lesser know are Tenerife’s delcious dishes, which make use of both contemporary and traditional foods in a medley of flavours. Visitors can feel right at home dining at one of the easy to find international restaurants, while many of the hotels in Tenerife will offer a selection of cuisine from around the world. Holidaymakers looking for an authentic holiday experience should try the island’s unique dishes full of spicy flavours and fresh ingredients.

A specialty of Tenerife is ‘mojo’ sauce, which is often served with fresh seafood, such as sardines, octopus, shellfish, boiled vieja (sea bream), tuna, and jareas and tollos (a local, salted fish). Another great way to try it is served over small potatoes. The sauce is made with a base of oil, vinegar and red pepper sauce then jazzed up with herbs and spices like garlic, cumin, pepper, coriander and parsley.

Cheese is a special delicacy on the island; served in paste form, fresh and uncooked. Pork, beef, chicken and rabbit are the main meats served, often slow-cooked in liquid and served in stew form. Vegetarians are also catered for with delicious veggie stews filled with tomatoes, potatoes, onions, maize and peppers. Gofio – a cereal paste prepared with grains such as maize, toasted wheat, or barley – is frequently served with stew. Chopped, marinated and spiced pork is called ‘fiesta meat’, and both potatoes and sweet potatoes are a frequent side dish.

You can also try a traditional Tenerife egg dish comprising of mole eggs served with a sweet syrup made from sugar and egg yolk. Other exciting tastes include ‘tollos’ (seasoned and dried shark strips), fried chorizo and sweet black pudding.

For the perfect complement to your meal, try a glass of wine from one of Tenerife’s world famous vineyards. Holiday makers can choose from spending the day wine tasting, visiting museums, shopping or just gazing at the scenery before enjoying a delicious meal and a glass of wine at one of Tenerife’s great restaurants.

Those looking to save some cash should opt for an all inclusive hotel option. Those who don’t want to have to worry about budgetting should opt for an all inclusive package.
